The concert will open with Australian composer Natalie Williams's XPT, conjuring up the exuberant rhythm and endless landscapes encountered while travelling on the Express Passenger Train along Australia's eastern seaboard. We then welcome the NSO's 2018 Eisteddfod prize winner Charlotte Kelso (mezzo soprano) to guide us through some of the most loved arias of the operatic repertoire, including pieces by Purcell, Bizet, Mozart, Puccini and more.
Finally, one year out from his sestercentennial (250th birthday), we celebrate in a performance of Beethoven's masterwork, the symphony of symphonies, No. 5 in C Minor ("Destiny"). According to Beethoven himself, the famous four-note opening motif signifies "the sound of fate knocking at the door." This is one mission you should not miss!
